The multiple – which has more than 450 pharmacies across Scotland, England and Wales – is also training staff at branches in Queensferry, Wales and Bourton On the Water, Gloucestershire, a spokesperson for Rowlands told C+D yesterday (May 23).

Pilot results will help Rowlands decide whether to “extended service activity in the future”, the spokesperson added.

“Completely booked up”

In both Upholland and Conwy, “appointments are completely booked up now for the next two months”, Mr Swift added.

“It’s not a very exciting product,” Mr Swift told C+D in an exclusive interview last month, “but this, for me, has been mind-blowing”.

With many GP surgeries recently having stopped delivering ear wax removal services, “people are really looking for somewhere to go… and that’s really working well for us”, Mr Swift said.

The pilot also forms part of Rowlands’ plan to move towards a service-based model, he told C+D.

The pharmacy contract is “pushing towards that anyway, to try and keep requests down from GPs, A&E or hospitals”.

Available treatment options

Under the pilot, patients can select:

  • an ear checking service costing £10
  • an ear check and wax removal service for one ear costing £40
  • and ear check and wax removal for both ears costing £60.

Each service uses the Tympa system, an all-in-one hand-held ear assessment device, the spokesperson added.

For ear examinations, the system offers a “high-definition digital otoscopy”, while for wax removal, the device delivers “microsuction of wax and debris removal”.

Earlier this year, Rowlands also launched a private weight management service pilot in 100 pharmacies across England, Scotland and Wales, with the aim of extending the pilot across the whole of its UK network “to enable more of its pharmacies to offer the free service”.
